Senior Citizen Well-Being: 5 Elements Of Adequate Health And Wellness

Blog

As you age, it is more important than ever to maintain a healthy lifestyle. It is the key to leading a happy and long life. You need to stay well in order to improve your mind, body and soul. Wellness is much more than just exercising regularly and eating right. In fact, there are a number of important elements that play a role in your health and wellness. Here are five elements of well-being that are crucial to healthy aging:

1. Social

From meeting new people with similar interests to ensuring you have a good support system, social interaction is a key element in healthy aging. Isolation leads to depression, anxiety and other mental anguish. Surrounding yourself with others and partaking in social activities can help improve your overall quality of life by giving you a sense of purpose while also helping you maintain your health.

2. Physical

Regular physical exercise can help you improve your mobility and balance, which is crucial since falls are more common as you age. In addition, physical activity will help to decrease your risk of illness and chronic diseases. A senior yoga class is an excellent source of physical exercise that will allow you to meet others your age interested in physical activity while also helping to reduce your stress and strengthen your body.

3. Intellectual

Even as an older individual, it is crucial that you take steps to expand your knowledge. This helps to keep your mind active, improve your overall brain function and reduce your risk of memory-related issues. Whether you recruit a friend to help you with a puzzle or play a game or you join a local book club with other seniors, make sure you do something to stimulate your mind and keep it healthy.

4. Environmental

While physical exercise is important, seniors may want to consider getting in some of their activity by partaking in activities outdoors. This could be anything from participating in community events to taking care of a garden. Try to make sure that it is something that you enjoy, as this will keep you happy, which helps to inspire you and ensure you are comfortable with life.

5. Occupational

Retired seniors often find that they miss their jobs. Luckily, this can easily be dealt with by volunteering in the community or sharing their knowledge of their past career by consulting at a workforce center. Regardless of your age, it is important to stay as productive as you can, as this helps to keep your mind fresh and boosting your sense of self-worth.

Senior citizens who don't necessarily want to live at home by themselves and want to maintain their independence may want to consider an assisted living facility. Assisted living facilities are a great way to accomplish all five of the aforementioned elements to help lead a healthy, happy, fulfilling life.

choosing a care home for surgical recovery

Are you planning a surgery that requires extended care beyond the hospital? Do you know who will be providing the care for you as you recover? My mother recently had a total knee replacement surgery and we had to scurry to find the nursing home that would provide her the care during the weeks after the surgery. We had never looked into nursing homes prior to this, and had no idea what we had to consider. It took a little while for me to learn what I needed to know to help her choose the care facility that could help rehabilitate her during those awful weeks. Visit my website to learn what I had found to be most helpful when choosing the care home for my mother.
